Southern Expansion: Tire Discounters Growth Continues with Virginia and Georgia Stores

Steven Wood, Chip Wood (Chairman), Anna Wood and Evan Wood operate Tire Discounters in the U.S.

Tire Discounters’ goal is to open 60 locations in 2022 through acquisitions and bring the company’s total number of U.S. stores to more than 200.

“Glass is a strategic focus area for Tire Discounters as we expand,” Tire Discounters managing director Anna Wood says. “We are looking at glass locations specifically as opportunities come up, but we don’t have a certain number of stores that will be glass-specific that we are targeting.”

Tire Discounters’ goal is to acquire “the best and we want to open in terrific markets where we see an opportunity to provide outstanding levels of customer service that only a family-owned business can provide,” Wood says.

Last week, the company announced acquisitions of family-owned Bulldog Tire and Lightning Auto Glass in the greater Atlanta area and Tire Outfitters in Winchester, Va. Tire Discounters also opened a new store in Lawrenceville, Ga. The addition of Lightning Auto Glass doubles the company’s auto glass repair and installation presence in the U.S. Mobile glass and ADAS services are currently available in Tire Discounters’ hometown of Cincinnati, and more service locations are planned for Tennessee.

“Acquiring a Georgia-based glass business will help further position us for expansion in auto glass service. We are also expanding our glass mobile fleet,” Wood says. “We absolutely see an opportunity for glass services as we expand our footprint. We’re looking at the right places and spaces that make sense for Tire Discounters.”

Tire Discounters recently opened a new store in Lawrenceville, Ga.

Tire Discounters was founded by Chip Wood in 1976 with a single, one-bay store. Today, his children, Steven, Anna and Evan, run the company with him.

The company’s southern expansion accelerated after December 2020 with the acquisition of two Porterfield Tires retail stores, a commercial outlet and a warehouse with a distribution center. More Atlanta locations are planned.

Tire Outfitters is Tire Discounters’ first acquisition in Virginia.

Tire Discounters’ expansion comes after several staff changes meant to fuel the company’s rapid growth. Chris Yapp, formerly an executive with Amazon and P&G, joined in August as chief marketing officer, according to the company’s web site. In September, former Wendy’s executive and Human Resources leader Sheri Harper joined the company as chief people officer, as well as Jeff Rodgers, former Michelman Inc. and executive vice president, joined as chief financial officer. “The new CPO position was created to strengthen the company’s commitment to developing and supporting a deep bench of talent across the entire organization, currently at 1,500 employees and growing,” the website states.
