Axpo and Pilkington Automotive Finland Oy, part of the NSG Group, have signed a long-term wind energy power purchase agreement (PPA). According to the companies, the partnership is a significant step toward powering NSG Group’s plants in Finland with clean electricity and further demonstrates their commitment to sustainability.
“This PPA was developed during a time when signing long-term agreements was becoming increasingly difficult. It demonstrates that, even in such a challenging environment, we can successfully help our clients reach their sustainability targets by leveraging Axpo’s expertise and knowledge of the market,” says Axpo Sverige AB originator David Eickhoff.
For eight years, Axpo will supply Pilkington Automotive Finland’s two manufacturing plants with an annual total of 35 GWh of wind-generated electricity from the Storbacken wind farm. The joint company press release says the use of renewable electricity underscores NSG Group’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and embracing sustainability in its operations.
“We are delighted to sign this long-term PPA with our partner Axpo Nordic to secure renewable electricity for our facilities in Finland. Securing fixed prices for zero-carbon electricity, especially during a time of such volatility, will support our customers and be a huge step toward our sustainability objectives,” says Pilkington Automotive Finland Oy managing director Jussi Parkkali.
Together, the two companies say they aspire to set an example and accelerate the transition toward cleaner, more sustainable energy sources. NSG Group officials say the company aims to source the equivalent of at least 50 percent of its electricity (by kilowatt hour) from renewable sources by the end of the 2024 fiscal year. The PPA will contribute not only to this target but NSG Group’s 2030 science-based target of reducing Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions by 30%.
