Jeep Recalls Wranglers and Grand Cherokees Due to Windshield Defroster Defect

Stellantis, owner of Jeep, recalled nearly 200,000 Wrangler 4ex and Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrid SUVs due to a software issue that could turn off the vehicles’ windshield defrost system.

In January, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened an investigation into a similar software defect involving Lucid Motors’ windshield defroster recall over a software update solution that may not adequately fix the problem.

Lucid issued a recall on January 10 for 2,042 of its 2022-2023 Air electric sedans because the high-voltage coolant heater (HVCH) may fail to defrost the windshield.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall notice 24V-111, model-year 2021 to 2024 Wrangler 4xes and 2022 to 2024 Grand Cherokee 4xes may have been built with incorrectly programmed hybrid control processor software, which could turn off the windshield defrost system under certain conditions.

The agency says a defective windshield defrosting and defogging system can reduce visibility and increase the crash risk.

“A hybrid control processor (HCP) software error may cause the defrosting and defogging system to be inoperative,” NHTSA says. “An inoperative windshield defrosting and defogging system may decrease the driver’s visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.”

To correct the problem, the carmaker will update the HCP software. Dealers and owners will receive the recall notices the first week of April.
