Federal Agency Updates Rating System with New ADAS Elements

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) 5-Star Safety Ratings program now includes several recent Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) developments.

The 5-Star Safety Ratings are a consumer-facing system the NHTSA offers to keep drivers informed about the safety of individual makes and models.

According to officials, the federal agency has dubbed the initiative the New Car Assessment Program (NCAP). The rating system will now account for pedestrian automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, blind spot warning, and blind spot intervention.

“Our goal with NHTSA’s 5-Star Safety Ratings program has always been to help consumers choose safer vehicles and to encourage manufacturers to improve vehicle safety,” says the NHTSA’s chief counsel Adam Raviv. “With these NCAP updates, we’re ensuring consumers have more useful and relevant information on the latest safety technologies and that the program keeps up with the pace of technological change and innovation.”
