A bill has been introduced in the Maine House of Representatives to establish a registration process and mandatory standards for certain independent motor vehicle repair facilities.
The bill says that shops must align with increasing technology and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) standards to maintain safety, reliability and consumer trust.
The bill would require shops that are “authorized to perform repairs by an original equipment manufacturer” to maintain certain minimum equipment and infrastructure requirements. Technicians would also have to be certified and participate in continuing education. Affected shops would also be required to register annually with the state.
The bill was introduced as emergency legislation in the Maine Special Session and has been referred to committees in the House and Senate.
