Honda has begun operations of its new Resource Circularity Center, which is designed to give new life to the tools and equipment used in vehicle production and assembly that would otherwise end up in landfills. This includes equipment used at the factory to install glass.
The center is located near the Marysville and East Liberty Auto Plants in Ohio. According to officials, it represents a milestone in the company’s global goal to reduce its environmental impact by creating a circular economy business model that maximizes material value and extends the lifecycle of indirect goods.
Many automotive recycling centers repurpose car parts, but Honda’s Resource Circularity Center recycles the tools and equipment used to make cars and car parts, including retired equipment, office electronics and vehicle service parts.
“A circular economy isn’t just about recycling,” says Matt Daniel, director of Procurement Sustainability, American Honda Motor Co. Inc. “It’s about how Honda can meet as many human needs as possible from a given resource, for as long as we can, until it can no longer serve a viable purpose.”
According to officials, Honda has a long-term vision to expand the Resource Circularity Center business model near additional production facilities in North America.
