A Fuyao Glass America plant in Ohio has been burning since yesterday evening, according to media reports.
The roof of the Fuyao Glass America facility in Moraine, Ohio, first caught fire at 8:30 p.m. on March 22, according to the local fire department. As of the morning of March 23, the firefighters had not yet extinguished the blaze.
The Moraine fire marshal said in a press conference that firefighters weren’t able to determine right away if there was actually a fire in the building when they arrived on-site.
“Once they knew there was, the battalion stepped up the response and sent more crews to the fire,” the marshal said.
He added that the fire appears to have only affected roofing material so far, but the fire department hasn’t been able to enter the building to assess the situation. The marshal says strong winds and lightning forced firefighters to pause their efforts until the storm passed.
The marshal explained that the fire started on the roof of a new factory building.
“They do special processes there,” he says. “The building is still under construction. They’re still assembling equipment and making tweaks to machinery.”
A Fuyao spokesperson told the Dayton Daily News that the fire largely did not affect Fuyao’s auto glass operations and was isolated to a new coatings plant. The spokesperson added that the auto glass plant “will resume operations soon.”
The Dayton Daily News reports that “thousands of gallons of water” have been used to fight the fire, and multiple media outlets confirm there have been no reported injuries so far.
“At approximately 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 22, a fire was reported at our Moraine, Ohio, facility,” Fuyao Glass America officials told the local media. “Employees quickly implemented our emergency response plan, all were evacuated safely and first responders were notified. We will provide additional updates as we learn more, but we are grateful that our employees are safe and for the professional, dedicated and quick support from local fire services.”
