Study Says ADAS Cuts Claims

The Highway Loss Data Institute’s (HLDI) most recent study of one automaker’s Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) technology shows how the increasingly complex features affect insurance claims.

The HLDI studied model-year 2018-2023 Mazda internal combustion engine vehicles with ADAS features, calculating how various types of automotive insurance claims changed during that period. The ADAS features HLDI studied included automatic emergency braking (AEB) and forward collision warning (FCW), which often use windshield-mounted cameras.

The study found that claim frequency decreased for Mazdas with both AEB and FCW:

  • Collision claims decreased 3%;
  • Property damage liability (PDL) claims decreased 13%; and
  • Bodily injury liability (BIL) claims decreased around 9%.

Claim severity, on the other hand, increased approximately 4% for both collision and PDL. The study didn’t offer any data on BIL claim severity.
