Volvo Cars USA LLC has issued an updated position statement emphasizing the importance of using original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts during a windshield replacement.
“Volvo Cars USA LLC requires all windshield replacements on Volvo vehicles to be performed according to Volvo standards at an authorized Volvo retailer or certified collision center, using only Volvo Genuine Windshields and adhesives,” the position statement says.
Since there are “many variants of aftermarket windshields available,” Volvo says that installers can’t be certain that an aftermarket windshield meets exact Volvo specifications. Not meeting those specifications could affect the vehicle’s structural integrity and the performance of its advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).
Volvo’s forward-facing ADAS systems and its heads-up display systems are designed to work with OEM parts and may not function properly if aftermarket parts are used, the position statement says. Recalibrating these systems could also be more difficult with an aftermarket windshield versus an OEM one, Volvo says.
I guess they don’t realize there are laws in place regarding the use and access to non OEM parts in the United States. I think SEMA should weigh in.
So…. what are people supposed to do when these manufacturers stop making OEM glass for their vehicle? What happens when the OEM glass is on back order but the aftermarket lass is readily available?
