The California Motor Vehicle Glass Act is scheduled to appear before the State Assembly Judiciary Committee at a hearing on June 9.
California Senator Tim Grayson (D) introduced SB 988 on Feb. 5. The bill follows model legislation from the National Council of Insurance Legislators (NCOIL) and includes a provision requiring auto glass shop owners to obtain a claim number from a customer before officially accepting a job.
Multiple individuals and organizations in the auto glass industry, including the Auto Glass Safety Council (AGSC), have been working to educate state legislators about how that provision could potentially harm auto glass shop owners and constituents.
The Judicial Committee’s hearings begin at 9 a.m. local time, according to the committee’s schedule, and SB 988 is sixth on the list of bills to review. The hearing will be held in the California State Capitol building, room 437, and will be livestreamed on the Assembly’s website. The committee schedule notes that “testimony may be limited” without further explanation. As of press time, the committee has not yet responded to glassBYTEs’ request for more details.
