LYNX Services wants to amend its complaint in the lawsuit against Safelite Group and State Farm Insurance, but it doesn’t want anyone to know how.
LYNX initially filed suit against State Farm and Safelite on June 27 for alleged trade secret misappropriation. The third-party administrator claims that the insurer and Safelite’s third-party administrator branch, Safelite Solutions, misappropriated information from LYNX’s METRYX program during State Farm’s TPA transition in July of 2025.
Judge Jonathan Hawley of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of Illinois stayed the case after several months of litigation and ordered all parties to attempt to resolve the issue through mediation. They failed to do so, and Judge Hawley lifted the stay on May 19 and referred the case to Magistrate Judge Ronald Hanna for a status hearing, which occurred via conference call on May 27.
Judge Hanna stated during the hearing that he originally intended to set a deadline to file an amended complaint. After hearing Safelite’s arguments against an amended complaint, Judge Hanna ordered LYNX to file a motion by June 26 asking permission to amend its complaint instead. LYNX did so, also requesting that the amended complaint be filed under seal.
LYNX argued that it should be able to file the amended complaint under seal because it contains or references information the court had already approved for redaction in earlier court filings.
In its motion, LYNX also argued that it had the legal right to file an amended motion, despite any objections from the defense. “LYNX is not attempting to delay proceedings or gain a tactical advantage,” the motion says.
“Paragraphs 27-30 and 33 of the first amended complaint describe confidential information reflected in the redacted portions of [Lisa] Langford’s declaration,” the complaint says.
LYNX has already filed exhibits under seal in support of its current motion. During the May 27 hearing, Judge Hanna said that “if [Safelite still opposes] amending the complaint [when the motion to file an amended complaint is filed], State Farm or Safelite would have the opportunity to file an objection.” Neither party has done so as of press time.
