While the Supreme Court has blocked the steep tariffs imposed by the White House in early 2025, the administration has enacted new tariffs.
The United States Trade Representative Office (USTRO) issued a statement detailing the new tariffs. USTRO says these tariffs are being implemented as a result of investigations into the affected countries’ “failure … to impose and effectively enforce a prohibition on the importation of goods produced with forced labor.”
USTRO’s action impacts the economies of approximately 60 countries, including those with auto glass production facilities. The document says imports from China and Japan are subject to a 12.5% tariff, while imports from Mexico, the United Kingdom and the European Union have a 10% tariff. USTRO says that some automotive components are exempt from tariffs under the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, but automotive safety glass is not among them.
These tariffs took effect on July 24, 2026.
