California Enacts New Auto Glass Repair Rules

California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 988, the California Motor Vehicle Glass Act, on Sept. 27, setting new requirements for auto glass shops handling windshield work and insurance claims.

The law requires shops to tell customers whether a vehicle has an advanced driver assistance system and whether calibration or recalibration is recommended after windshield repair or replacement. Shops that perform the calibration must also inform customers in writing whether the calibration was successful. Other provisions require good-faith estimates and itemized invoices, restrict assignment of insurance policy rights, require shops to obtain a claim number before officially accepting a job and prohibit certain incentives and false or misleading claims tied to insured glass work.
