Kellman Celebrates 90th Birthday

Legendary auto glass entrepreneur Joe Kellman celebrated his 90th birthday on Saturday at the newly opened Kellman Community Center in the North Lawndale section of Chicago.

Approximately 300 people, including sports figures such as Gayle Sayers, Richard Dent and Mike Pyle, all attended along with a roster of well-known politicians and businessmen and long-time auto glass industry executives including Dale Schenian and Gary Turner and former Globe employee Gladys Lazar.

Kellman was owner and president of Globe Glass and Mirror and the USA Glass Network before selling his company to Windshields America, which eventually "merged" with Safelite. He is generally credited with having developed the auto glass network concept and is known for being among the first to have exclusive work agreements with insurance companies.

The Kellman Community Center recently opened on the same spot where the original Better Boys Foundation (BBF) had been. The BBF was founded by Kellman, along with his friend, entertainer Buddy Hackett.
