See Into the Distance: Mercedes Gives Drivers Long-Distance Eyes

The Mercedes Benz S-Class S600 2007 model will reportedly bring the next generation of vision aids and what may be described as a combination of heads-up display (HUD) and the night-vision technology we're most familiar with from military use.

According to the company, the Night View Assist option provides the driver with nearly 500 feet of visibility in addition to what he or she normally would have at night, even on completely darkened roads. The system uses infrared light projected from beams mounted in the headlights onto the road in front of the vehicle.

An infrared camera mounted near the rearview mirror in the windshield reflects the infrared light, displaying the images onto the instrument panel on a high-resolution display. The Night View Assist system does not work when the car's high-beams are activated.
