A former owner of Hawkeye Auto Specialists in Coralville, Iowa, who was charged in connection with a two-year scheme to defraud insurance companies, was sentenced up to 10 years in prison. Former owner Jason Shannon was also ordered to pay nearly $16,000 in restitution last Friday. According to Iowa Today, Shannon will also receive three years of supervised probation. According to the original court documents, Shannon over-billed insurance companies for $10,000 between September 2000 and October 2002 for work done on policyholders' auto glass. He was charged with first-degree theft after a year-long police investigation and had pleaded not guilty. Shannon was convicted of billing for more expensive windshields than were being installed. (For example, billing for a heated windshield while a regular unit was installed.) |
