In response to the glassBYTES item posted on Friday concerning a recent settlement by Safelite Glass Corp. in West Virginia, the company has issued this additional information.

"The settlement was related to an incident in which the driver of a Safelite van swerved to miss an accident that had just occurred on the freeway. In doing so, he made contact with the truck that struck Mr. Abshire's vehicle, resulting in the young man's death. The $2.5 million settlement was made on Safelite's behalf by its insurance company because, while it was clearly an accident, the driver of a Safelite van was involved in the incident. The accident and settlement had nothing to do with Safelite's business as a glass company. A settlement of this amount is not unusual in this type of situation. Our thoughts are with the family of Mr. Abshire."
